Tanzania is situated in East Africa, and its economy runs primarily on tourism. It is a country of geographical extremes like the highest point being the Mount Kilimanjaro peak and the lowest point being the lake bed in Lake Tanganyika. It also shares a part of Lake Victoria, which is the largest lake on the continent. But Tanzania has much more to offer than this and one such place is the Serengeti. The Serengeti is a national park and a haven for animal lovers as you can spot the big 5’s of Africa and the fastest animal on the plant: the Cheetah.

Why Volunteer In Tanzania

Although tourism is good in Tanzania but it is still stricken with poverty and children often die in the formative years due to malnutrition, AIDS and other diseases. A beautiful country, Tanzania needs help from volunteers to preserve their wildlife, which also seems to be depleting due to extensive poaching. As a volunteer in Tanzania, you will be able to get close to the heart of Tanzania, their people and their lives. You will be able to get access to some of the most spectacular landscapes from Mount Kilimanjaro to the wide grassy savannahs that teem with wildlife, and above all, you will be able to know more about the Masaai woman and the tribe.

Types Of Projects Available
As a part of volunteering in Tanzania, you will get to choose the kind of project you are interested in. The different types if projects available include:

*	Cultural Experience: As a volunteer in Tanzania, you can be a part of the culture of the country and take back with you immeasurable cultural experiences. As a part of this project, you will be able to speak with the local people, mingle with them and collect data for enabling research on the Tanzania people and society.

*	Internships: There are different types of internships available in Tanzania, which can vary from medical training to community trainings and are normally of a longer duration than most of the other programs. The internship programs can be from 9 weeks to a year depending on the nature of the project.

*	Soccer coaching: Soccer is the new craze in Tanzania and they have been preparing for the FIFA world cup for a long time. In fact soccer is the chosen sport in most of the urban and rural schools. So if you are a soccer player or have played the game at any level then you can volunteer for this specific program. It will be grueling as well as fun and present a new way of looking at the younger generation of Tanzania.

*	Teaching in schools: Most of the Tanzania teaching programs are for schools situated in the rural areas. As a volunteer in Tanzania, you can teach different subjects in rural schools from English to mathematics, science, economics and others. Most of the rural schools don’t have proper building structure and lack educational infrastructure. As a volunteer, you can assist the existing teaching staff and also teach.

*	Women’s development: There is a lot of work going on in Tanzania to uplift the status of the Masai women. The Masai tribe is the original people of Tanzania but they have been left out for a long time. As a volunteer, you can impart your experience and teaching and help in strengthening the Masai women for the future.

*	Cheetah Conservation: Cheetah is the fastest mammal on earth and exists only in the African wilderness. There are some interesting Cheetah conservation projects for which you can volunteer. Cheetah’s are almost on the brink of extinction and these conservation projects help with the breeding in wild and captivity for cheetahs and also take care of educating the African farmers so that they don’t end up killing any more of this beautiful animal.

Volunteer Requirements

Age: The minimum age for volunteering in Tanzania should be 16 or older.
Duration: The duration of the projects can vary from 4-12 weeks depending on the nature of volunteer activity

Fee and Other details

There is a fee attached to each of the projects that you volunteer for. The fee is charged in advance and is charged for the following:

1.	Accommodation
2.	Food/meals
3.	Transportation within the region
4.	All types of training material

Conclusion

Volunteering in Tanzania is an opportunity that can’t be missed because Tanzania needs us and we can’t let them down.

Tanzania is a land of geographical extremes, the mainland occupies an estimated area of 954,087 km2 and it boasts a population of an estimated 37,187,939 rich in culture and traditions. Tanzania holds Africa’s highest peak and among the tallest freestanding mountains in the world, Mt. Kilimanjaro). It is also home to a section of Lake Victoria, the largest lake on the continent as well as Africa’s lowest point – the lake bed of Lake Tanganyika.

Though not as explored as it neighbour Kenya, Tanzania has some of the best beaches of Africa as well as diverse flora and fauna. The unspoilt white sandy beaches of Tanzania offer a fine setting of fantasy and a cool breeze of the great Indian Ocean. Magically placed close by the skyscrapers of Dar es Salaam city, the beaches are a must visit destination for anyone interested in exploring the vast east Africa coast.

Zanzibar archipelago boasts numerous beaches that abound in fringed coral reefs. The magnificent beaches are ideal for swimming with dorphins, snorkeling, scuba diving as well as other water sports. Stone Town, the historical capital of Zanzibar, is also a huge attraction of the island.

Mafia Island Marine Park, situated south of Zanzibar, is home to several world-class snorkelling sites. As a matter of fact Mafia Island Marine Park is one of the few places in the world where sharks assemble every year. Catching this spectacle is indeed thrilling, but requires you to be quite courageous as the sight of the sea giants can be intimidating.

A safari to Tanzania basically involves touring the northern and/or the southern safari circuits of the country. The northern circuit, which is also the most popular, includes destinations such as the Serengeti National Park, which is famous the world over due to its diverse range of wildlife. The annual wildebeest migration, which takes place between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in neighboring Kenya is easily the main attraction of the Serengeti.

Other attractions along the northern safari circuit include the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Olduvai Gorge as well as Manyara and Tarangire National Parks. Ngorongoro Crater was formed by volcanic activity that erupted during the mighty Kilimanjaro and the Great Rift Valley. It is one of the world’s greatest natural spectacles with its magical setting and abundant wildlife never fail to enthrall visitors.

The southern circuit, comprising the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park are less popular, although they are interesting destinations. Touring those sites can be extremely enjoyable for both the first time visitor or frequent tourists. The destination is ideal for those looking for a safari destination that is not too overcrowded with tourists.

Africa is the proud home of safaris a fact that has contributed greatly to the economic growth of most countries in this lovely continent. Thousands upon thousands are continuously flocking into Africa to have the experience of a life time and as a result spend months planning for the same.

Tanzania has awesome lodges and camps within the national parks. Some of the well known parks include the Serengeti, Selous National Park, Ngorongoro and Mikumi National Park. These camps and lodges have been built to international standards and they cater to international as well as local tourists who stay here as they go on their safari.

Inside the Serengeti national park, we have the Serengeti Sopa lodge built on the south western side of the Serengeti. The lodge is uniquely advantaged as it lies on the migration corridor of the annual Great Wildebeest migration phenomenon. The lodge has been built to accommodate a maximum of 170 guests. The lodge also has conferencing facilities. Each of the rooms at this lodge has a veranda where guests get to enjoy viewing the Serengeti plains. Serengeti Sopa offers local as well as international cuisines prepared by the certified chefs and professionally trained cooks. Some of the activities one can engage in include birding tours, cultural visits as well as ballooning.

Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge is another top lodge found in Tanzania. The lodge is found in the lush plains of Mount Meru that borders the Arusha National Park. Ngare Sero Lodge is built from an adopted colonial farmhouse built in the 1900s. At the lodge, tourists have spectacular views of the Mt Kilimanjaro.

The forest surrounding the lodge is home to many bird species. The Colubus monkeys and Sykes have their home here. Some of the activities that one can engage in include boating, game drives, cultural visits to see the Wameru. Cuisine includes vegetarian and non vegetarian. You also get Sauna and Eastern massage.

Opened in 2002 the five stars, E-Unoto Retreat Lodge is 1 hours from Arusha and neighbors Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks. It’s ideal for honeymoon, or conferences. It offers panoramic view of the Great Rift escarpment and Lake Miwaleni a hippo habitat. It has 25 spacious Maasai themed bungalows.

We have over four hundred bird species plus other animal species including monkeys and reptiles. The restaurant here offers international as well as local cuisines. Activities that one can engage in include game drives, cultural visits to Masai village, nature walks, birding among other activities.

Tides lodge hotel is located on a Swahili tropical coastline beach that was aptly names as one of the “Top Secret Beaches of the World” by Sunday Times Travel Magazine. The lodge combines both rustic and beach themes. Guests get to enjoy private sunbathing at each cottage. The main cuisine is sea food but other foods can also be prepared. Some of the activities include scuba diving, kayaking, wind surfing and kite surfing.

Saadani Safari Lodge is a nine cottage beach lodge in the 1100km2 Saadani National Park, the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the ocean. In Saadani legend is that, the beach, bush and river come together in a clash of colorful ecosystems. Sea food is the main specialty. Tourists can go on game drives, boating or snorkel in the Indian Ocean. Due to its proximity to both the National Park and Indian Ocean, tourists enjoy both aquatic and land wildlife.

Tanzania is a land of many geographical extremes. The East African country is renowned for being home to the highest point in Africa (Mount Kilimanjaro) as well as the continent’s lowest point (the lake bed of Lake Tanganyika). The country spans an impressive 954,087 sq km and it also has the lions share of the largest lake in Africa – Lake Victoria.

Tanzania also has some of the most pristine beaches in the region. The white sandy beaches offer fine setting for island fantasy hence they draw thousands of visitors to Tanzania every year. The northern and southern tourism circuits of Tanzania are also popular travel destinations. The northern circuit’s Serengeti National park is easily the most popular tourist attraction in the region. The national park is home to the Big 5 – buffalo, leopard, lion, rhino and elephant, all of which can easily be spotted as well as other animals. The annual event sees millions of wildebeest moving from Serengeti to Masai Mara and back in search of greener pastures. Also part of the northern circuit is the Tarangire National Park, named after the Tarangire River. The 2,600 sq km park boasts a high concentration of wildlife during the dry seasons as well as a high number of elephants.

The Southern Circuit is also a fascinating destination although it is less popular. The region made up of, among other parks, the Selous National Reserve and Ruaha National Park, is popular among visitors looking for a tour destination with less visitors and a greater number of wild animals. Selous is the only park, beside Ngorongoro, in which you can spot the rhino. A majority of tourists to the region also prefer to go on hiking adventures to the Uduzungwa Mountains Park.

June to August, is the end of the rainy season and the period has favorable weather during the day as well as cool evenings. This is, however, not the best time to go on a wildlife viewing safari as the park has a lot of water and animals are hidden in the thick foliage.

Everyone entering Tanzania is required to carry a visa citizens except citizens of some African and commonwealth countries. Visitors are advised to obtain visa’s in advance from Tanzania Embassies and High Commissions as some airlines may require it before allowing you to board. However, you can also be issued with a visa on arrival at Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro international airports and at the Namanga Gate on the Kenya /Tanzania border. In addition, all visitors are required to have Passports, valid for at least six months.
