Kuching is sharing virtually a similar festivals as other region of Malaysia, however you may still find some local festivals that only Sarawakian get to celebrates. All festivals and events in Kuching are as follow:

1. New Year’s Day (1 January)

Public Holiday through out the whole Malaysia, and the world; and Kuching has no different too.

2. Chinese New Year (January/February)

Chinese New Year is fall on 1st day of each lunar calendar year, which will fall on any days during January or February.

Google it for exact date for the certain year you wish to know, eg. “Chinese New Year 2010″. Travel to Kuching two weeks ahead of the Chinese New Year is the best time for you to see the local people getting ready for the Chinese New Year festival. People in Kuching is often busy shopping for Chinese New Year goods and goodies during this time. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, locals will do their final shopping before noon, and after 2pm generally the Kuching is much like a dead town. Shops closed, businesses stopped, everyone is at home getting ready for their reunion meal. For anyone who is still in Kuching on this day, the only place you can have your dinner is probably the fast food restaurant such as KFC or McDonald.

During the midnight when the clock strikes 12am, the whole of the city is much like entering into a war, you can be astounded by the fireworks on the sky, and also firecrackers are everywhere. The whole celebration will last for about half an hour to an hour before you can get a good sleep. It’s illegal though playing with fireworks or firecrackers; however it isn’t been fully enforced in Sarawak. You won’t get this if you’re in the capital of Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur. Most businesses remain closed in Kuching from the first to the forth day of the festival, you still have to dine at the fast food restaurant during those days. However, cafe, pubs and bars are normally opened as soon as the day turns dark.

3. Good Friday (March/April)

Nothing much special in Kuching on this day, it’s just a public holiday.

5. Labour Day (1 May)

Simply a public holiday. Business as normal for shopping malls and restaurants.

6. Wesak Day (May)

It may fall on any day during May be based upon which calendar year. If you’re at Kuching during this period, visit the Buddhist temples, in which the crowds are gathered on this special occasion.

7. Gawai Day (1 June)

This is the very important festival for the Dayak (indigenious people) in Sarawak, which celebrating the end of rice harvesting and welcomes the new planting season. Everyone in the longhouses in Sarawak will start to celebrate the festival from the Eve of the Gawai day. On the Gawai day itself, which is 1 June, traditional rituals are held, dancing, plenty of local foods especially Bamboo rice and bamboo chicken. If you are traveling in Kuching during this special event, you may take part in the Annah Rais Homestay program and experience the fun of the Gawai festival together with the locals people. No walk-in traveler will be entertained during this day at most of the longhouses, apart from pre-arranged tour from the tour company, and the invited guest by the local people.

For Annah Rais Longhouse, simply take part in the homestay program and you will get a chance to experience the way the local people celebrate the festival at Annah Rais village.

8. Dragon Boat Festival (June)

As the name suggest, you will witness the dragon boats competition on this day through out most part of Malaysia. In Kuching, you can witness the dragon boat competition along the Sarawak River, at the Kuching Waterfront. Local Chinese will be making their own rice dumpling in this special day for their family. Most Chinese coffee houses in Kuching do selling them as well, so you should try it!

9. Rainforest World Music Festival (July)

These are the famous worldwide event which will be held in Kuching every year. Rainforest World Music Festival brings together the planet famous musicians around the world and indigenous musicians from all parts of mythical land of Borneo to get to the same stage to perform for you.

Such event can last for 3 days and will be held at Sarawak Cultural Village, next to Damai Puri Resort (formerly known as Damai Lagoon Resort), about 30 km from Kuching. To learn more about Rainforest World Music Festival, check out their official website at http://www.rainforestmusic-borneo.com.

Very often during this period of time, Kuching hotels occupancy rate are all time high and may be fully booked quite often, so you are advised to book early if you’re going to attend to such global event.

Resort that within the walking distance to the Sarawak Cultural Village are Damai Puri Resort and Permai Rainforest Resort. Damai Holiday Inn Resort is also within a walking distance, nonetheless it takes you a longer walk, approximately ten to fifteen mins!

10. Mid Autumn Festival (August)

Also called Mooncake or Lantern Festival. Nothing much special accept eating mooncake (lots of mooncakes, everywhere is selling it) and watching kids carrying lantern each and every corner of the streets once the day turns dark. Novice photographer will really appreciate such occasion.

11. Malaysia’s National Day (31 August)

It’s a nation public holiday, and in Kuching, it’s celebrated each year, check out at Central Padang at Kuching.

12. Hungry Ghosts Month (August/September)

It is believed by the Chinese that in the 7th month of lunar calendar, ghosts are returned to the earth for feasting. In Kuching, check out this “hungry ghost event” that is held next to the old central post office. It’s always filled with crowd.

13. Christmas Day (25 Dec)

It’s also another significant event for the Christian in Kuching. However, special events’ arrangement mostly limited to each individual church only. Clubbers also gathered at certain pubs for counting down during eve of Christmas. Nothing much special in Kuching, better spend your time in Singapore’s Orchard Road I guess, should you happen to travel in this region!

That’s about all the festivals and events in Kuching. So plan your vacation wisely. Wish you have a pleasant vacation soon.

During these current days of economic instability many prospective real estate purchasers in Malaysia as well as other areas are considering purchasing a condo instead of a single family home. Years ago, when someone was attempting to find that ideal piece of real estate they would not normally consider a condo. Truth told, the purchase of a condo is fundamentally the same as buying a house. Nonetheless, there are a few differences and points one should take into account before making your final decision on which kind of property in Malaysia you can afford or satisfies your expectations.

The first thing most new home customers need to consider is cost. It’s typically true that a condo in Malaysia will surely cost less than a single family home. Pricing will vary depending on the location in which the property is based. It will likewise vary depending on the actual size of the unit, the floor as well as the on-site facilities. Although the principle price of the condo is less you need to determine just how much the condo fees are. Occasionally this might add considerably more to the monthly loan payment. However, generally it is still of lesser cost then buying a home.

A condo maintenance fee is paid by every resident within the condominium complex. These types of fees will normally cover the expense of lawn care, roofing expenses, drive-way, handymen, and amenities such as a pool or gym. This can be extremely beneficial for anybody who does not want to worry about repair of their property in Malaysia. Several utilities are normally covered within the condo maintenance fee like water and sewer and trash collection.

As with a standard single family home, the condo owner will have to pay their particular property taxes in addition will need to purchase a certain amount of insurance. This is typically some sort of liability insurance. This is certainly an issue that the possible owner of a condo in Malaysia should confirm with the real estate broker previous to signing the property agreements.

A few other things one needs to take into consideration before investing in a condo in Malaysia would be as follows:

1. Just be sure you will be comfortable living in a property complex which has many units and sharing common space with other home owners of the condominium complex.

2. Make sure to thoroughly read the condo association regulations and rules. Some condominium complexes do not allow pets, or tend not to allow the owner to refurbish their condo without having prior authorization.

3. Be sure you make certain the condominium complex remains safe and secure.

As you see purchasing a condo in Malaysia could possibly be the appropriate solution for somebody seeking out to buy a real estate property. Just be certain that all your preferences are covered and that the pricing is within your overall price range.

Condo Malaysia the perfect Property And Real Estate Search engine.

The largest metropolitan area in Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur. Better known as KL the greater area of KL is known as as the Klang Valley and is home to about 7.2 million people.

Which is approximately the home to 1 in every 5 Malaysians. Like most large cities you tend to find yourself sitting at home with nothing to watch. That’s why a lot of KL-ites get decked out and make use of KL’s very active nightlife.

If you have ever wondered what a Malaysian party is like a number of big clubs that attract large crowds every weekend in some of the well known clubbing areas are as follows.

Changkat Bukit Bintang or what some might refer to as Star Hill, is one of the main shopping areas in the heart of KL. You can go to a variety of shops and dining places here and a lot of these places turn to pubs, drinking holes and clubbing venues come night time.

Just like Changkat Bukit Bintang, Asian Heritage Row is a wine and dine place that comes out to play when it turns dark. The theme of converted colonial buildings mixes history with a little bit of party and you will have more than a few options of places to get your freak on.

Popular among tourists, Beach Club is listed in severala few travel guides as recommended places to stop by in KL. Just a heads up though. Not all those girls hanging around there are really “girls”. If you know what I mean.

Zouk started out in Singapore but in 2004 it set up a sister club in Ampang Road. It consist of several different clubs and bars in one building. Zouk, Velvet Underground, Phuture, Aristo, Bar Sonic and Terrace Bar. Zouk organises numerous events yearly such as Zoukout, Cleo Bachelors, several charity events and many others.

Other places in the Klang Valley that deserve mention is Bangsar, Solaris in Mont Kiara, Sri Hartamas and Jalan P Ramlee. The party isn’t just isolated to the capitol however other states in Malaysia also have an active nightlife. If you ever get the chance you might want to visit Penang, Ipoh and Johor Bahru in West Malaysia and Kota Kinabalu Sabah and Kuching Sarawak in East Malaysia.

There are so many other up and coming places all over the Klang Valley however and far too many to mention. These few places should give you a taste of what the Malaysian nightlife and Malaysian clubbing scene is all about. So have fun, enjoy yourself but don’t get too wasted and end up going home with a dude. Unless you’re into that kind of stuff.

In 1957, Bako was established as a National Park and is the oldest in Sarawak, Eastern Malaysia. Bako covers an area of 2,727 hectares and is situated on the Muara Tebas peninsula, right at the mouth of the Kuching and Bako Rivers. The reason it became a National Park was due to the huge diversity of vegetation and wildlife.

Bako National Park is in part formed through the erosion of the sandstone over millions of years. This erosion has led to various formations in the rock. Erosion by wave action has also caused huge rock formations to be left dotted around the coastal area, all nicely carved in one way or another. Furthermore there are stretches of silvery sandy beaches which add to the beauty of the place.

If you are to visit the park you need to take a 20 minute boat ride across from Kampung Bako, which is one of the Malay settlements.

In comparison to other National Parks in Sarawak, as mentioned – Bako is small but at the same time it is one of the most interesting and beautiful to visit. The park is laid out in various colour-coded trails which makes it easier for the visitor to get around. Some of these trails are only a light stroll while others are full-on jungle treks for those who are keen to experience more of the park.

What makes Bako so special is the diversity in plant life and fauna. For instance, there are a number of carnivorous plants, which I know fascinate everyone, from sundews to pitcher plants and bladderworts. There are all sorts of other tropical plants and trees that the western tourist really only sees either on television or in their local botanic gardens.

The wildlife includes silver leaf monkeys, monitor lizards, mouse dear, fruit bats, long-tailed macaques and also the rare and highly treasured long-nose proboscis monkey of which there are said to be around 150 here. This monkey can only be found on Borneo.

Click the link for my own experience of Kuching hotels in Sarawak – near Bako National Park, Malaysia, and to learn more about the beautiful Damai.
