The economy is pretty tight. That means that people are trying to spend less money. And that also means that people are attempting to find DIY ideas for wedding receptions that will decrease costs. But doing it yourself is NOT worth the trouble unless the results are going to be utterly fabulous.

Check out this quick list of DIY suggestions that are fairly easy to tackle and look terrific:

1. Centerpieces are a big part of the overall decor. When there are high numbers of tables and there are centerpieces on each table the cost can become fairly astronomical. This makes DIY centerpieces popular. There are many that can be completed with little investment that add a high class touch to wedding receptions. This one is a favorite that can be completed by almost anyone (DIY experienced or not!)

You can create one centerpiece idea using a simple bowl, a Styrofoam ball, silk flowers and a bit of greenery. Put the ball in the bowl and secure it (glue, etc.) Then insert the flowers and a bit of greenery. And you’re all set. Another idea is to gather glass vases (all different sizes) and fill them with various candies that match the colors of the wedding reception. Another idea (that could reflect the taste of the bride and groom) is to work with antiques. For instance, gather a bunch of different antique vases and use them for fresh flowers on the tables.

2. Wedding receptions can have great favors. Favors have been a long time tradition at wedding receptions. Some easy DIY suggestions for favors include: CDs, matchboxes, and seed packets.

Matchboxes can be personalized to reflect the particulars of the wedding at hand. They can have the date, venue, names, etc. actually printed right on the item. This makes a great favor. CDs can be compiled very economically and handed out with copies of the music played at the reception, etc. Seed packets are traditional, yet affordable.

3. The Guest Book: DIY ideas for the guest book can be hard to come by. But they’re out there. The guest book is traditional. It’s also expensive. The expense is often questioned due to the infrequency of use the guest book gets after the nuptials.

One fabulous DIY idea for the guest book is to enlarge a copy of the engagement photo have it put behind a great matte and then propped up on a large easel by the door with a pen handy. Guests sign the matte instead of a traditional guest book. The bride and groom then take it home, frame it and hang it in their new home as their first family photo.

Doing it yourself can be a big mistake when it comes to wedding receptions. It can also be a fabulous answer to the issue of getting what you want for the least expense possible. To ensure that DIY works for you and the wedding receptions that mean the most to you just make sure that you aren’t doing it to save money alone. Only take on DIY projects for wedding receptions if they are exactly what you want; saving money alone isn’t enough of a reason for DIY!
