We’ve known it for a long time but it didn’t quite add up. With increasing frequency, we experienced bizarre weather conditions which had not been felt earlier in the past century. These phenomena are due to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases create a blanket that traps the release of heat back into space consequently making the earth a warmer place to live. Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, the so-called greenhouse gases are discharged into the atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned such as gasoline and coal.
Greenhouse Gas Online reports that 30 percent of carbon dioxide originates from transportation. The developed world is heavily dependent on the supply of gasoline. Out of the 30 percent carbon dioxide emissions, diesel engines from buses, delivery and semi-trailer trucks discharge one third of the carbon dioxide emissions.
During the 1930s, the trucking industry took over the rails as the main mode of transport of agricultural products from farms to cities. The beginning of the trucking system created a problem of fuel emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide dirtying the highways and roads with repugnant soot. This started the accumulation of man-made greenhouse gases. Further, GreenHouse gas reveals that for the past 100 years there had been a fast accumulation of greenhouse gases starting the process of global warming. Obviously, the need for transportation is to be blamed.
The inventor of the prototype diesel initially utilized vegetable oil as fuel for his invention. Rudolf Diesel then knew that the popular fuel would be a refined chemical derived from gasoline. Despite this, he was hopeful that vegetable oil would find its useful place as the main source of fuel for his engines. Bio-diesels gradually became an alternative fuel source in the 1920 and the 30’s in some European countries.
Utilizing bio-diesels have a lot of ecological advantages- ecologically and economically. The bio-diesels are derived from vegetable or animal oils. The vegetable oils come from rapeseed or soy or even oils from restaurants. Interestingly, these garbage oils used to fry your French fries can be collected, processed and used directly on your diesel engine. A nice way to a healthy environment, no soot nor greenhouse gas is produced. Bio-diesel isn’t only recyclable but is biodegradable too.
And this is the most important of all, utilizing bio-diesels decreases carbon dioxide emission from trucks, the filth that we hate. Wang and Lyons conducted a study done in 2000 in West Virginia University comparing the emissions of trucks on bio-diesel and trucks on pure petroleum diesel. The results reveal that the bio-diesel fueled trucks have lower particulate matter, lower carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions than the trucks that were fueled with petrol.
A gallon of gasoline burned amounts to 20 pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide. So, if a trucking company originally utilizes 12,000 gallons of diesel fuel annually that would be a whopping 240,000 pounds of carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere. Now, add all the trucking companies and how much less carbon dioxide would be emitted if all of these companies opt for bio-diesel. Certainly, a much lesser amount of carbon dioxide would be emitted and impact on lessening the warming of the earth.
Traveling the highways, trucks on petrol diesel spew out noxious fumes threatening the health of people all around. These fumes contain aromatic carcinogens that increase people’s risk of developing lung cancer over time. Moreover, bio-diesels reduce the incidence of acid rain since, they don’t contain any sulfur. And because a truck on bio-diesel moves silently, they are sweet on the ears too.
There are claims that trucks on bio-diesel aren’t fast enough. But, studies show bio-diesel on their engines doesn’t make them slower and inefficient. These studies show no significant increase or decrease in fuel mileages when these trucks do their necessary errands of transporting food, people and furniture anywhere. What’s more, bio-diesels naturally protect the engines and save money on maintenance.
Convinced that the best way to a healthier earth, several trucking companies run exclusively on bio-diesels. The fleet of trucks of Serenity Movers is fueled by bio-diesels and travels 55,000 miles per year transporting furniture efficiently, safely, sweetly and serenely.
If all trucking companies use bio-diesel as the best option we’ll see a world with lesser catastrophic hurricanes and other drastic climate changes. Global warming somehow will halt. We’ll make the world a more sustainable place for our children and for future generations. Economically, we’ll stop depending on gasoline and be free from the dictates of oil rich nations. We’ll save money and enjoy our life too. And our farmers will get a better share from the switch.
If we want to experience a better world, it’s time to advocate and choose shipping services using bio-fuels. Let’s all take action!
