Decide if the door that you will be working with is wood or steel. Doors come in various styles with newer ones being hinged panels and older ones being a single panel. If you doubt that you cannot make the repairs yourself, consult a tacoma garage door repair specialist. These doors are heavy and the springs have a lot of tension so do not take the chance of hurting yourself or someone else.

There are several fast fixes that you can look for. Missing or broken hinges, spring system repair, crooked doors and WD-40 for squeaky or stiff doors.

Have someone assist you with repairing the spring system since it is dangerous and difficult. The helper can hold up the door or it can prop up with 2 x 4s. Placing an item underneath the door to catch it if it falls is also wise. Another safety precaution is running cables through the middle of the coil spring. Old springs may break without giving any warning. Read the owners manual to ensure proper spring tension. It will make sure that the door is working right.

1.)To help with getting the proper replacement spring, look for a colored paint on the end of the spring or hold on to it for comparison. The colored paint is used to indicate the size and weight of the door. New springs will have the same color.

2.)Springs can have double or single hoops on the end. Double hoops are a little harder.

3.)For garage door openers pull the emergency release for manual operation.

4.)Join the spring to the pulley clip or hook. Make a gap with a screwdriver, if it is a double hoop, in order to join them.

5.)The metal cable or line needs to be completely in the pulley wheel before you join the other end of the spring. Proper placement happens with the spring is attached. To make this process easier, raise the door up a little more or have someone pull on the spring using a metal line or chain.

6.)Remove the props, lower the door, reset the emergency release and check to door for proper operation. It should touch the ground but not hit hard.

Fixing a crooked door.

1.)The side that is higher needs a vice grip put on the smooth part of the track above the lower roller. This keeps that side from raising up more.

2.)Use another vice grip on the other side of the door and with your free hand, lift that it until both sides are even. Put that vice grip in the same position as the other on so the door will not fall.

3.)Look on above the door by standing on a ladder. You will notice an cable that is unwound. Place the end of the cable into the groove that is closer to the track. From that point on the cable can wind in any order. Bring the door up more and reposition the vice grips to make this part easier.

4.) Force the rollers back into they track if they are not in place. If they are straight, the door will work right.
